Broken plates

Six years after our divorce you sent me a letter,

you told me how much you missed my laugh

and for some reason we started writing  about those plates

we used to have

and how when they fell out of our hands and onto the floor
I’d cry

you used to pick up the pieces and say

“maybe we can make them into something new someday”

and put them in a shoe box

all those forgotten chips of china cups , saucers and nostalgic plates…

we were going to make a mosaic-

do you remember ?

and now you’ve gone and written

“I’d really love to see you smile again”

and  I’m  stuck at this kitchen table

re -reading your words…

 wondering
